Cara Page - Review

Cara Page

Cara’s work focuses on portraiture; she has used a variety of media to create her work – all of her work has started with photography and been developed into materials such as glass, mirror and acetate. Most of her work explores mixed-media, combining different materials and techniques including collage, sculpture and print. Cara says that portraiture is her favourite type of work; she has always been interested in it and feels that it is her forte.

Cara’s work is focusing on our perceptions of people, she is using patterns and other images behind and over the photos to distract from the actual face and features and to stop the viewer from making immediate judgments about the model. She says that John Stezaker and Matt Wisniewski are her main influences for this project; both artists work with photos and replace faces and parts of the images with other photos and landscapes.

There have been complications in the process of producing this work; Cara feels that the subject matter can be a little stale and that she has a constant struggle to keep coming up with fresh ideas. She also mentioned her struggle with working with other people, especially the models, she mentioned a lack of communication and sometimes co-operation on their part.

I asked Cara if she would continue to look at this theme and she said she would almost definitely explore a similar theme to this in the future if not continuing with this exact subject. Whilst portraiture, photography and print are her strengths she said she would like to continue this theme in other media, in particular installation.

Evaluation of review:

The majority of this review is good as it covers the most important aspects of Cara's work, looking at the reasons behind her work and her intentions for work in the future. There has been research on her artistic influences and this review is well-informed. However, I should not have mentioned any of the negative elements of Cara's work as a review is supposed to reflect the artist's strengths and positive aspects.
